Crap, my last comment is mangled, I don’t know why. Here is what I was trying to write:

If m is prime, then gcd(a, m) = 1, 0 < a t.a = 1 (mod m), and there we go.

Thanks Guppy! I was thinking of a slightly different proof, using Euclid’s algorithm to show that for prime m, one can always find a multiplicative
inverse for any a, 0 < a t.a = 1 (mod m), etc. etc.
I wasn’t really happy with this, though – I’ll try your way :)

Try the pigeonhole principle. For any a, consider all a*b where b ranges over Z_p. Can a*b = a*c if b!=c? Hence…
